The EARTHscope K-16 (ES K-16) Education Initiative is being developed to augment and enliven earth systems,
community planning and sustainability focused curriculum. By developing a standard for geo-storytelling that
also serves as a publishing framework for student content, the ES K-16 initiative aims to facilitate the publication
and aggregation of best of class community mapping projects so that student work can actually become part of a vital
learning and research resource.
The publication and distribution of student created geo-story content helps fulfill the vision of what authentic
project/place based learning is all about. The EARTHscope team is actively seeking partnerships with teachers,
educational technology specialists and curriculum developers to:
- Develop and incorporate special ES Library collections into lesson plans
- Develop ES Special Collections resource guides for teachers
- Develop a set of 'best of class' standards for publishing student community mapping projects within the ES framework
- Design a student publishing challenge in which 'best of class' community mapping projects from around the United States
will be selected to be part of the permanent collection for the ES Library
We are currently in discussions with educators and researching NGO's, GO's, Foundations and not for profits
that support the development school programs involving innovative community mapping and planning projects
and earth systems education. These include: the Orton Family Foundation, DLESE (the Digital Library for
Earth Systems Education), ESRI (the leading GIS software company), and the Green Map System to help support the ES K-16 initiative.
